Among the few certainties in life is the fact that cats can, do, and will climb trees ...and occasionally get stuck. In just the past few days, cat-in-tree dramas unfolded in Georgia, Maine, and even China. Contrary to common perception, fire departments will not usually risk personnel in a cat-in-tree rescue. Most firefighters will tell you the cat often climbs down on its own when it becomes hungry. No other story exemplifies what not to do than this sad incident that occurred recently in California. If you see a cat that may be stuck, your first call should be to local animal control. According to the Humane Society, local animal control agencies are prepared to take your call.
