In 1924, a husband-and-wife newsteam working for the Albert Lee Tribune created a character for their readers that became more popular than they imagined. When black cat Albert Lee Tommy graced pages of the newspaper, he added a humorous touch to forecasting the weather. He eventually moved on to commentary, and became popular enough that Burt, the husband, felt compelled to adopt a black cat so readers could meet the "real thing."
