Black Cats in Fine Art

The famous and infamous painter Frida Kahlo is known for her unique style and arresting artwork. In Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird (pictured), Kahlo tells the story of her anguish and affection for a lover. The hummingbird hanging from her neck is a trinket of love. The thorns around her neck symbolize her emotional suffering. The black cat, ready to pounce, represents her dread that the affair will end. Her pet monkey appears in a number of her self portraits.
