Numerous legends surround the creation of the Chinese Zodiac. In one, the Rat fears he will be considered ugly in comparison to the Cat during a meeting with the Jade Emporer. So, the Rat fails to wake the Cat in time for the meeting. Because the Cat misses the meeting, he is kept out of the Chinese Zodiac, and the age-old animosity between the Rat and the Cat begins. This year's Lunar New Year Day celebrations begin February 7th - and 2008 is the Year of the Rat.
