Saving Poet Poe

We couldn't imagine a literary world without Edgar Allen Poe's "The Black Cat," could you? Thank goodness for Poe, his strangeness and his everlasting legacy, and his resting place in the picturesque town of Baltimore, Maryland. Their pro football team--the Ravens--is named for Poe and Baltimore's Poe House and Museum, located in a rowhouse Poe once occupied, also honors the dark poet. "Budgetary concerns," however, place the museum on the chopping block. Visit here to see it's all about.

The Poe House and Museum is the earliest surviving home where Poe lived. He moved there with his Aunt Marie and cousin Virginia in 1832. Poe artifacts at the location include a lock of Poe's hair.

If you haven't already heard, it's official: soon-to-be Oscar host Anne Hathaway will play Christopher Nolan's Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises. Regarding a recent screen test for the role, cinematographer Wally Pfister said, "She looks phenomenal in the wardrobe." Ms. Hathaway will host the 83rd Academy Awards this Sunday February 27th.

Movie Review: Kuroneko

Japanese for "black cat," Kuroneko is a unique addition to the horror film genre. You've probably never heard of its stars or writer/director (Kaneto Shindô), and it is understandable if you haven't - the film was first released in 1968 in Japanese with English subtitles and although it enjoyed critical acclaim, its appeal was never fully recognized by the masses.

In a medeival Japanese setting, a mother and daughter-in-law fall prey to a band of roving soldiers. In their last tortured moments the two are granted/cursed with the power of vengeful spirits, forever after hungry for samurai blood. When the son of one and husband of the other finds them, the heart of the story is revealed. If you can find it, we highly recommend it. Four out of five purrs.

Well Worth The Price

Artist Christopher Salmon would like to bring author Neil Gaiman's short story The Price to life through computer animation, and you can help. Gaiman's The Price is the story of a mysterious black cat that appears one day near the front porch of a home and is adopted by the resident family. The cat is battle-worn, with a frayed ear and other scars, but friendly. It is what the cat does to protect the home and family from a supernatural foe that is the crux of the story.

The animation so far looks great. Neil Gaiman himself is a fan of the project.

Movie Review: Cat's Eye

Inspired by three of Stephen King's short stories, the 1985 film Cat's Eye stars James Woods and a very young Drew Barrymore. The first story, Quitter's Inc., focuses on one man's struggle to quit smoking and the unusual methods his treatment center employs to ensure he does. The second story, The Ledge, focuses on a bet between a crime boss and his wife's lover. The third and final story, (our favorite), is The General. In this story, a stray cat must protect a little girl from a hungry goblin. The film is available on Netflix and Amazon. Three out of five purrs!

Nutty Seagull a Friend to Cats

Movie Review: Cat People

Cat People is a 1982 horror film starring Nastassja Kinski, Malcolm McDowell and John Heard. It is a remake of the (in our opinion much better) 1942 film. The plot centers on a race of ancient cat people who carry a terrible curse: if they ever show real affection, they transform from human to panther and succumb to bloody urges. Director Paul Schrader said, "it has more skin than blood," and so, this is not a family film. The acting is good and the atmosphere--set in moody New Orleans--is dark and foreboding. Two out of five purrs.

We followed a link (thanks Kevin) to a facebook page for Jones the Kitteh, and... There is a scene in one (or more) of the Indiana Jones movies in which someone yells: "JONESSS!"--after Jones does something adventurous or crazy. Pictures of Jones the Kitteh made us think of this scene. Jones, who looks like a black cat, but is described as "brown-haired," is a spunky dwarf cat. Dwarf cats are either bred on purpose, or born while nature has a hiccup. There are several major dwarf cat breeds, some of which are called (amusingly): Bambino, Dwelf, Napoleon, and Lambkin. Pictures-of-cats.org has some interesting information, like what happened when Paris Hilton wanted a dwarf cat of her own. We understand Jones the Kitteh was rescued from a feral colony: way to go!

The Grinch Who Stole Stockings

Essie is either a Grinch, or wants more stockings for herself set out for Santa. No matter what her intention, her caretakers outed her as the neighborhood sock thief by posting a sign and the stolen goods on their fence. The sign starts out "No, you're not going mad..." and goes on to explain a wish to return the socks. This is the second black cat bootie-burglar we've heard about; the other lives in the UK.

Not enough attention is given to movies about cats, don't you think? Here's an easy one to enjoy: The Cat From Outer Space. Released in 1978, it differs greatly from today's films. There are no explosions, and the actors in the lead roles are likable, every-day people (Sandy Duncan, Ken Berry). The humor is cheesy, and in levitation scenes you can see the harness wires, but there are still some laugh-out-loud moments. We give it three out of five purrs. This kitty will not take "no, I can't pet you right now," for an answer, even when it comes from a traffic cop in the middle of writing a ticket. The kitten crawls up and all over the officer, even on his head, and the cop shoos his frisky friend away again and again. Fearful he'd be labeled an animal-snubber, the officer told his superiors about the event at the end of his shift before they watched the video from his dash-cam. We all know how sharp kitten claws can be!

Rare Movie Poster Up for Auction

A unique movie poster for The Black Cat (1934), featuring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi will most likely set a record price during the Signature Vintage Movie Posters Auction, at Heritage Auctions, in Dallas Nov. 12-13. The 75-year old poster is in near-mint, unrestored condition and has never before been seen by the public, or at auction. A current value estimate equals $250,000, but 10 years ago a vintage poster for The Mummy sold for twice as much. Boris Karloff's costume from the film is also up for auction, and the current bid is $10,000. Update!!

Well, he won over British Shorthair "McCain" by a 2-to-1 margin, and he's up for another award at the biggest cat show of the year: Meet the Breeds, in New York. He could be the next CFA Iams Cat Idol. The show will include 41 registered cat breeds, and the answers to questions such as: What is the only state to have an official cat? The show is Oct. 17-18.

It's October, so let's talk Edgar Allan Poe and Vincent Price: two masterful advocates of the macabre. Not long ago a post on this blog provided a picture of a Hollywood tradition - the casting call; one in 1961 that sought a black cat for Roger Corman's movie anthology: Tales of Terror. LIFE magazine's picture archive features more black cat pics from the event, including this one of Vincent Price and Peter Lorre. Tales of Terror showcased adaptations of Poe's Morella and The Black Cat. Want to watch? It's on Hulu.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Poe's birth, and his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland celebrates with several events, including an art exhibit at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Poe's morbid tales inspired artists such as Henri Matisse, Paul Gaugin, and Robert Motherwell to create wonderfully dark art - the exhibit will run until Jan 17, and admission is free.

The infamous Moulin Rouge opened its doors in 1881, and boasted operettas and can-can dancers. Le Chat Noir, "the most extraordinary cabaret in the world," also delighted its visitors. The two were adopted as mousers for the business. At first, the former owners were uncertain a busy shop atmosphere was the best place. A jaguar cub now calls the biggest zoo in Lima, Peru home, and made a public debut April 14 under Mother's watchful eyes. The birth - the first in captivity this year - is significant to conservation efforts because the jaguar is a "near threatened" species whose numbers are in decline. A black jaguar is rare; black coats happen in only 6% of the species. Black jaguars are sometimes called black panthers, but the term "black panther" is generic and can refer to both jaguars and cougars.

It should go without saying that to avoid cat-in-tree dramas cats should be kept indoors. Cats should also be kept indoors to preserve local wildlife. "But my cat claws my furniture," is not an excuse. This story has a happy ending, but because the caretakers' other cat got struck by a car, one can surmise both cats are the overly-common "inside/outside" kind. There is only one way to keep your beloved feline safer from disease and injury: Raise him/her indoors and keep them there. If you see a cat in a tree DO NOT attempt a rescue. And it isn't guaranteed the local fire department will respond to your call; your best bet is to call your local SPCA or Humane Society.

Art Project Benefits Cats

Cincinnati, Ohio animal shelter personnel were surprised to discover 40 stray cats living in the abandoned buildings of a manufacturing site north of the city. The cats' caretaker (the site watchman) couldn't afford any health care, only to feed the cats, leaving their population to rapidly increase. After the discovery donated food, spay/neuter services, and health care were provided, but more funding is needed. Local artists stepped up and created many beautiful works with the cats as their subjects, and named the effort Animal Rescue Art Project 2009. Many of the cats are available for adoption, but even if you live outside Ohio, you can help. The artists' work is available on eBay.

A cat in the United Kingdom (UK) celebrated a birthday the first week of December, and his caregivers believe he might be the world's oldest. Mischief, adopted as a kitten in 1981, is described as a 27-year old cat with a spring in his step. The previous "oldest cat" in the Guinness Book of World Records was Spike, who passed on in 2001 at 21 years. Creme Puff, the oldest cat ever, was born August 1967 and died August 2005 in Austin, Texas. The UK seems like a hotbed for elderly kitties, as evidenced here, when a UK couple claimed their cat was the country's oldest. There is no current record holder.

The vice president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) says the current recession will hit pets hard, as their owners face difficult decisions. The numbers are staggering: During the Great Depression, 300,000 animals were turned in to animal shelters. A current estimate says 40,000 to 50,000 pets could be given up this year, and while more animals arrive at local shelters, funding for those shelters may be reduced. If you are considering adopting a pet, now would be an ideal time, but, a measure of caution is warranted - dogs cost an average of $1500 a year, and cats can cost $1,000 a year. Deciding to wait to adopt a pet is better than being forced to part with one, and if you're looking for a furry-friend fix, consider volunteering or donating at your local shelter.

Jan McHugh-Smith, president of the San Francisco SPCA says a study of 380,000 dog adoptions showed little difference between black-dog adoption and all other coat types. The "little difference" adds up to an approximate one-day delay. The new trend does not transfer to black cats, however, with the ratio at the San Francisco SPCA equaling three cats to every dog.

Shelters across the U.S. this October appear divided on the topic of black cat adoption. The SPCA in Los Angeles upheld their ban on black cat adoption until November 1. They say they "have found many people have ulterior motives when adopting black cats and it is a shame that ...superstitions about black cats have made them targets." However, the director of the Humane Society in Boulder Valley, Colorado says, "I've never in my 27 years ...heard about anything real happening to a black cat." And according to this article, an ASPCA spokesperson says, "data does not support the notion black cats are at terrible risk at Halloween."

In Canada, a Humane Society overturned a long-standing ban on black cat adoption and decided to promote black and orange pets for adoption the week before Halloween. In the United Kingdom, shelter workers consider Halloween a great opportunity to match black cats with new homes.

To ban black cats during October places yet another hurdle in the path of an animal with adoption rates already lower than most. But allowing black cat adoption during Halloween is considered by numerous shelters to be too great a risk. There may be no easy solution, but one thing remains constant - the number of adoptable black cats in shelters continues to rise.

At this weekend's CFA Iams Cat Championship in New York, a DemoCAT and RepubliCAT went head-to-head for votes. "Obama", a Bombay, and "McCain", a silver British Shorthair, seemed to like all the attention. Voting results have yet to be posted, but participants thought "Obama" held the lead. Other activities at the event included the cat agility course, best of the best competition, adoption promotion and tricks by Iams-trained cats. A Russian Blue named Runner took the prize for Best of the Best, and appeared on Live with Regis and Kelly today. Update: "Obama" won by a 2-to-1 margin.
